Saffron
Saffron in perfumery smells almost nothing like the kitchen spice. It is leathery, dry and slightly rubbery, and it is the signature of a whole generation of rose-and-oud compositions.
What saffron is
Usually safranal, the aroma molecule isolated from the stigma, rather than the whole spice — which at perfume concentrations would be absurdly expensive.
